On August 25, 2026, PROcan reached an exciting milestone with the granting of U.S. Patent No. 12,714,888, titled “Portable Gas Delivery Device.”
The patent, naming Michael R. Minogue and Anne-Marie Freeley as inventors, covers innovations in portable gas delivery technology designed to make administering oxygen more accessible, portable and adaptable to different emergency situations.
What's Included in the Patent?
The patent contains 30 claims addressing several aspects of the technology, including:
1. Portable Oxygen Delivery System
The patent covers a device that connects a portable gas canister to a specially designed manifold, allowing gas to be directed toward a person through a mouthpiece or mask. A manually operated trigger enables controlled gas delivery.
2. Integrated Mouthpiece and Airway Options
The patent describes several patient interfaces, including a mouthpiece, face mask and other airway devices. These include designs intended to help maintain a seal and facilitate gas delivery.
3. Multiple Ventilation Options
An important feature is the ability to connect alternative gas sources through a secondary port. This allows the device to accommodate rescue breaths from a manual resuscitator or connect to other oxygen delivery systems.
4. Replaceable Gas Canisters
The patent includes configurations that allow a depleted gas canister to be removed and replaced, providing the option to continue gas delivery using another canister.
5. Additional Safety and Monitoring Features
The patent also describes optional features such as pressure gauges, pressure relief valves, one-way valves and ventilation monitoring systems, including CO₂ detection to help indicate whether breathing or ventilation is occurring.
What Does This Mean for PROcan?
The patent represents an important step in protecting the engineering and technology behind PROcan.
While the current PROcan product focuses on providing a simple way for bystanders to deliver oxygen-rich rescue breaths during CPR, the patent also describes additional configurations and technologies that could support future product development.
Importantly, not every feature described in the patent is necessarily included in the current PROcan product. The legal scope of protection is determined by the granted claims.
This milestone reflects PROcan's commitment to developing innovative tools that help people take action when breathing stops.
